Genocide Archive of Rwanda

The Genocide Archive of Rwanda is the first of its kind in Rwanda. Our collections include photographs, physical objects, audio, video, documents and publications as well as interactive mapping data.

The materials are preserved to international standards and accessible locally to those who visit the archive in Kigali, as well as globally through this website. Our physical archive is both temperature and humidity controlled, ensuring items are stored safely.

The objectives of the Genocide Archive of Rwanda are:

  • To collect all forms of material related to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, sourced from libraries, academic institutions, survivor organisations and individual donors.

  • To preserve our collections to international standards.

  • To provide universal access to our collections.

  • To encourage students, teachers and researchers to use our collections as an educational resource to teach about the history of the genocide, the dangers of genocide denial, and the importance of genocide prevention.

  • To train other institutions in the preservation of archive materials and help build capacity in archive management in Rwanda.

The archive allows previously inaccessible material to be consulted for personal, educational, and research purposes. Our collections are constantly expanding as new materials are either collected or donated. The archive also includes a publicly accessible reference library containing scholarship on all major twentieth century genocides.

Sharing information about the genocide against the Tutsi not only contributes to the preservation of its memory, but also serves as an educational tool for future generations. The Genocide Archive of Rwanda enables this by facilitating local and international research on the genocide and encouraging the world to understand genocide and its prevention.
