Jean Paul AKAYESUJean Paul AKAYESU was born in 1953 in Murehe sector, Taba commune, where he served as bourgmestre from April 1993 until June 1994.
During the genocide against the Tutsi, many Tutsis were killed in Akayesu's commune where they took refuge and Akayesu personally supervised their killings and provided a death list to the killers.
In October 1995 he was arrested in Zambia and the trial chamber found him guilty of Genocide acts and other crimes against humanity notably rape.
On 2 September 1998, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and he is serving his sentence in a prison in Mali.
